something small

it is never anything big, love lies in details, in understanding random little emotions, tiny gestures that can bring about a smile in the worst time...it is never reasonable the small lump sitting in your throat, impossible to swallow, waiting to burst out into tears...I am thinking about what could have happen, wondering whether it was supposed to happen, wondering what would have happened if it had happened...I thought about you in that one moment when I thought I could have died, remembering very well the smell on your body, the feel of your hair in my hand when I hold you in my arms, regretting that I did not go with you to the gas station before you left...sitting in the car, unable to stand up I wonder how you would tell my parents about it, who you would ask to call them...your voice suddenly seems so real on the phone, and I could feel your breath on my neck, holding on to the phone, imagining that you are very near...for a moment it seems not enough...10 minutes, half an hour, and hour and a half...not enough to loose the feeling that I am loosing you to a force unknown...there would have been nothing I could have done if this was meant to be so I cling on to you as if it was the last thing I am ever going to do, every time we hang up the phone you are slipping away into nothingness...I am afraid to go to sleep tonight.

somewhere between words...

I am thinking about languages everyday, living in between them, within them and yet somehow always outside sequences of words and sentences broken up by random symbols, which somebody at a time long ago decided to give meanings to. I am thinking about languages everyday, having to switch between one and another, substitute a word for ein Wort, JEDNO SŁOWO, một từ..., only to realize that sometimes only silence can express the notion currently occupying the mind. Here is the problem with language, the more of them you know the more inadequate you feel, because after years and years of learning and forgetting and convincing yourself that you'll remember again when the time comes, when your tongue is being pulled by necessity and need, you find yourself wasting hours of days and days of weeks and weeks of months trying to find the right word, where there is none. And you pull out one box after another, index cards with words on both sides and dictionaries and pictures with illustrations, bah you'd even pull out pieces of memory, somebody said that word at this place at that time, all that to fill in one tiny blank in the mind, or not, because words, whatever languages they are in, are only an approximation of thought, an imitation, a compromise. Therefore, when (Angst) overwhelms me, it overwhelms me a way so different from what the person who writes it down in parenthesis for me to read might have meant it years ago. And I want to yell! Stop trying to make it clearer, because the more words you spread on the page, the more blurry the idea becomes, the tree deformed by layers and layers of our imagination. Yet, at the same time, there swells in me a silent pride on being your secret informant, based on a blind belief that I understand (in approximation) what you mean where so many others cannot. And for that beast waving its wings in my chest, and the breathless "où est la porte...?" at the airport when another "Excuse me" would mean une catastrophe I will continue to think about languages everyday. Somewhere between words lies procrastination!

Phước bất trùng lai, họa vô đơn chí...

One day, people will say this was not a good year. With the crisis going on and so many natural and not so natural disasters all over the world, we have been watching a drama in slow motion, the spiral going steeper and steeper downward, with no prospects of ever coming out again. For some this fire is just an additional sign, of a world coming to an end, of a bad ending of a decade. For others, it is the end. More desperate people lost in the fight against a natural force reproduced by people, unable to let go of their life savings they faced the flames, and lost. This is not a good year.

My heart goes out to you all, those who are now forced to stand aside and watch everything they've got turn into ashes, with the hope that somehow, you'll come out of it again.

EACC is burning...

Patria

It was a long way to go, to come and see you, to come to hate you and yet to love you so much my heart is bleeding everytime I think about how much I have come to hate the way you have become - a stranger in my mind, because my memory has preserved a different you, so much more gentle and generous, with people who cherish life for what it is, because they have gone through too much loss and pain. The days drifted by as if in a dream, and I wake up to find myself far away from you again, with a stabbing pain in my soul, having realized how far we have come apart, becoming so fully aware that I might never, never in my life be able to be in your embrace again. I have become one of your many lost children. The greeness of your land still burning in my mind, the thin trees growing on stony land, surviving despite all odds. The people whose face are older than their age, looking at me with pity mixed with envy. I don't know how to sooth their pain. I don't know how to sooth my pain, the wounds open up again and again to let me know that whatever I say will never be enough to convince myself that I need to walk away, that I will come back again, knowing very well that I am setting myself up to be hurt, by those who have reserved the right to claim you as their land. And I know I will come back again, let my skin be burn by your heat, let my heart bleed for your suffering so that I can leave, wandering through the earth knowing there is a place somewhere from which I have come. That place I can no longer find.

land of the past

I am moving South, from the tiny, but always packed streets of Hanoi with its never ending noise and streams of people and vehicles to the magnificent Ha Long Bay, further, further into the very center of this country. The country curves, land becomes ever narrower with the sea threatening to overcome more and more of what people could use to survive. This land has been the dividing line, the front on both sides during the war that lasted so many years. They say, every grain of sand here is soaked with blood, rivers, land and sea, they have all become graveyards of people on both sides. Moving south I feel the air becoming hotter with every hour, bright, perfectly white sand appears alongside little fields in which the rice seems to be less green than the rice paddies in the north. Poverty written on the face of people and land. And yet, it is such a beautiful land, with wonders beyond imagination. I reach out to touch the sun, sweat streaking down my body standing in the heat for only 5 minutes. How do people here survive? How did they survive bombs, battles, sorrow and loss? The same way they survive the hardship of nature, the hot wind that blows not to cool but to dry up every living things and the unbearable heat. The same way they survive against the sea that threatens to take over the last pieces of usable land. They never stop fighting...
